Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini who is a businessman. Her parents are of Italian descent (her paternal great-grandpa), Irish, German, English and Scottish (her mother). Linda was the eldest child of four in San Francisco Bay, California. The acting bug grew in her at the age of ten when she played a role as a vocalist in the annual Christmas show at school. After graduation she had decide among New York, where she was able to pursue theatre and acting, and Los Angeles, where film and television were her options. Linda decided to move to LA. She was trained in acting in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and made her debut with the British television show Just William (2010). After her successful performance as Lady Rose MacClare on the period drama Downton Abbey between 2012 and 2015 Her first big break was in the fantasy movie Cinderella in the year 2015. James was later cast as Countess Natasha Rostova in the television version of War & Peace (2016) and also appeared in a variety of films. These included the action film Baby Driver (2017), the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017), The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) and The Dig (2021), and musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Back Again (2018), and Yesterday (2019). The actress was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2022 in her role as Pamela Anderson, the star of Pam & Tommy.
